Background:
Nepali Literary programs were started unofficially in 2008. The first program was on 5th May 2008, on the occasion of 98th Birthday of Late ‘epoch poet’ Siddhi Charan Shrestha (युग कवि सिध्दीचरँण श्रेष्ठ) at Mankajee/Bina Shrestha’s resident with a handful of literary enthusiasts hobbyists, like Ramesh Sthapit, Mankajee Shrestha ‘Jena’ and few others which was organized and managed by Mankajee Shreshta ‘Jena’. Since then, literary programs with music and dance have been organizing in different sarjak’s residents/parks/community halls in rotational basis with or without sponsors under different names and banners like but not limited to: Ekal Sanjh, Sahityk Manch, Chautari, and lastly as Nepali literary Society Vancouver BC Chapter until the registration of Nepali Literary Society, Canada (Nepali Sahityk Samaj, Canada).
Nepali Literary Society, Canada (Nepali Sahityk Samaj, Canada), was registered in BC registry in June 2021. The 1st meeting, in the form of the pot luck picnic, dated 22 June 2021 held on the ‘Barnet Marine Park, Burnaby, BC concluding with the 1st BoD with an Advisory board, following which kicked off the regular monthly program (mostly via zoom except a few in-person) amidst the pandemic COVID-19.
Since its inception in Zoom, sarjaks from -Nepal, India, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, USA, and Canada have been participating in the programs – thanks to the zoom facility courtesy CANFACS and quite sometimes partially supported by the City of Surrey Cultural department and the Oak Avenue Neighborhood Hub Society, Surrey, BC. It is to be noted that this is the only such society that is a fusion of genres/languages including but not limited to Poem, Muktak, Saayeri, Songs in multiple languages. Also noteworthy in this context, founding member Mrs. Bina Shrestha is conducting the ‘kid’s talent show’ with the concurrent view of promoting and preserving the Nepali language, regularly /monthly going to be under the broader banner of NLSC.
